Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre is a long-standing satirical puppet troupe based in Lawrence, Kansas, known for its irreverent humor and sharp social commentary. Founded over two decades ago by local writer and director Will Averill through Card Table Theatre, the company has become a staple of the Lawrence arts scene, delivering "debauched puppet commentary on current and past events" through its signature characters, including the acerbic Mr. Doper and his sidekick Bobby.
The troupe gained prominence as a recurring act in The Victor Continental Show, a sketch-comedy musical revue that ran for 15 years in Lawrence. Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre was one of the show's enduring elements, contributing to its reputation for edgy, locally flavored humor.
After The Victor Continental Show concluded, Averill continued to innovate in the local comedy scene, creating the quiz show M@ssholes, which, alongside Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre, formed part of the double-feature event Good Night, Lawrence! This event showcased the troupe's continued relevance and adaptability in engaging with contemporary issues and local culture.
Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre moved to England in 2003 (along with Will Averill) and performed under the banner of Axis of Evil Productions, going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007-2010, and touring the UK and Finland.
Today, Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre remains active, participating in events like the KC Fringe Festival and maintaining an online presence through its website, where fans can stay updated on upcoming performances . With its unique blend of humor and puppetry, the troupe continues to be a distinctive voice in Lawrence's vibrant arts community.
